The most quintessential English tradition, the afternoon tea was introduced to England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford in 1840. 37 years later, and this tradition was served at the first Championships in Worple Road. The photograph below shows a scene from the 1906 Championships where the ladies are taking tea actually on the courts!
In 1907 Mrs Hillyard, who became a six time Champion, ate a ‘fearful’ tea when persistent rain stopped play: 2 Bath buns, 6 or 7 slices of bread and butter, 3 or 4 cups of tea, 6 or 7 biscuit cakes, 2 or 3 slices of other cake and 3 plates of strawberries. No sooner had she finished than the Referee requested her to play. She lost her semi-final match and complained bitterly to the Committee and the Daily Mail.
Nowadays the Wimbledon Afternoon Tea is as hugely popular as ever, and using the freshest ingredients, we will present to you our classic reception sandwiches, Devon scones served with clotted cream and strawberry jam, a selection of tea pastries, along with the Wimbledon favourite of a bowl of strawberries and cream. And of course not forgetting a pot of Indian tea or your favourite infusion.
Afternoon Tea can be taken in the Wingfield Restaurant, Conservatory Kitchen or Cafe Pergola.
To ensure utmost freshness, strawberries — usually Grade I Kent strawberries of the highest quality from LEAF-certified farms — are picked the day before and arrive at Wimbledon at 5.30am, prior to being inspected and hulled.
Visitors with special dietary requirements are advised that they should bring with them what they need to eat and drink throughout the day.
