Estate Development: Assistant Commercial Manager

The All England Lawn Tennis Club, the home of The Championships, Wimbledon needs to recruit an Assistant Commercial Manager reporting to the Commercial Manager of the Estate Development team.

The main purpose of the job is to support the Estate Development Commercial Manager and Estate Development project teams in the delivery of Wimbledon Master Plan projects within a multi stakeholder environment. 

The ideal applicant will have the necessary procurement and cost management experience for major and complex building projects and will be capable of setting and monitoring financial control standards and systems to meet client governance and regulatory compliance.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:  To  support the project teams in the delivery of high profile projects within a multi stakeholder environment.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Commercial Manager, Estate Development

Background

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) organises and stages The Championships, Wimbledon.  Our objective is for The Championships to continue to be recognised as the world’s premier tennis tournament and as one of the world’s greatest sporting events.

The Club intends to maintain its position as a leading global sporting venue, and, in April 2013 announced the Wimbledon Master Plan for the development of the Grounds.  It is an evolving process and plans will change, but it is set to include:

Northern area

  • The remodelling of No.1 Court to include a new retractable roof, additional seating, enhanced facilities underneath the stands and a new landscaped entrance plaza (planned to be completed for The Championships, 2019).
  • Three new Championships courts with state-of-the-art players’ facilities and accommodation below, a new public walkway and fully landscaped surrounding area.

Central area

  • New Media Restaurant and facilities for BBG’s and Photographers completed for 2015 Championships.   

Millennium Building

  • Total comprehensive refurbishment of this building which was opened in 2000 and provides accommodation and facilities for players, Club members and the press.

Somerset Road

  • The redevelopment of the Somerset Road site, including demolition of existing covered courts and construction of a new complex of covered and clay courts integrated into the topography. 

Southern area

  • The repositioning of several courts in the Southern Area and widening of public walkways,  together with a new plaza and potential for a greater number of unreserved seats on No. 2 and No. 3 Courts
  • A new Southern Entrance to the grounds with landscaping to reinforce and enhance the image of playing tennis in an English country garden

Main Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with managing the cost consultants and overseeing procurement and commercial arrangements for delivery of the Masterplan
  • Supply chain management
  • Negotiating main contract packages
  • Procurement of a range of trade packages
  • Assisting with the assembly and content of packages for major projects, reviewing and signing off each package
  • Developing high level budgets for new projects

Person specification

Essential

  • Graduate level education
  • A  professional qualification in a relevant design/construction related discipline e.g. RICS
  • A good technical understanding of the design and construction of large shell and core building projects, plus the fit-out of hospitality areas and the statutory framework in which these are delivered
  • Experience of major capital projects (ideally over £100m) in a live operational environment, including budgetary control
  • Experience in managing and delivering projects under a Design and Build JCT contract
  • Up to date IT skills - including experience using a Revit 3D model to provide quantities and costs, project reporting, competent use of a cost control software, Excel, Word and Outlook

Desirable

  • Experience as the Contract Administrator or Cost Manager through to final account, practical completion and handover
  • Experience in delivering a stadia or major public sports venue, within a client organisation or a main contractor
