Estate Development: Infrastructure Manager

The All England Lawn Tennis Club, the home of The Championships, Wimbledon needs to recruit an Infrastructure Commercial Manager within its Estate Development Department reporting to a Project Manager.

The main purpose of the job is to manage and oversee a wide range of capital infrastructure projects from inception to completion/operation as part of the delivery of the Wimbledon Master Plan. 

The ideal applicant will have the necessary specification, technical detailing, procurement and cost management experience of hard landscaping and infrastructure integration in an urban environment and be capable of setting and monitoring standards to meet The All England Lawn Tennis Club’s aspirations for the look and feel of the Grounds.

JOB TITLE: Infrastructure Manager

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:  To manage and oversee a wide range of capital infrastructure projects from inception to completion/operation as part of the delivery of the Wimbledon Master Plan. 

RESPONSIBLE TO: Project Manager

Background

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) organises and stages The Championships, Wimbledon.  Our objective is for The Championships to continue to be recognised as the world’s premier tennis tournament and as one of the world’s greatest sporting events.

The Club intends to maintain its position as a leading global sporting venue, and, in April 2013 announced the Wimbledon Master Plan for the development of the Grounds.  It is an evolving process and plans will change, but it is set to include:

Northern area

  • The remodelling of No.1 Court to include a new retractable roof, additional seating, enhanced facilities underneath the stands and a new landscaped entrance plaza (planned to be completed for The Championships, 2019).
  • New Championships courts with state-of-the-art players’ facilities and accommodation below, revised Gate 1 with a new public walkway and fully landscaped surrounding area.

Central area

  • New Media Restaurant and facilities for BBG’s and Photographers completed for 2015 Championships.

Millennium Building

  • Total comprehensive refurbishment of this building which was opened in 2000 and provides accommodation and facilities for players, Club members and the press.

Somerset Road

  • The redevelopment of the Somerset Road site, including demolition of existing covered courts and construction of a new complex of covered courts and clay courts integrated into the topography. 

Southern area

  • The repositioning of several courts in the Southern Area and widening of public walkways,  together with a new plaza and potential for a greater number of unreserved seats on No. 2 and No. 3 Courts
  • A new Southern Entrance to the Grounds with landscaping to reinforce and enhance the image of playing tennis in an English country garden

Main Responsibilities:

  • Manage and advise on infrastructure projects through all stages from inception to completion/operation
  • Manage and oversee all external hard landscape and infrastructure projects (roads, utilities, pathways, entrances, gates etc.) including IT, broadcast and services integration
  • Work alongside the in-house soft landscaping team to create an exceptional environment for the Championships
  • Design and manage the development, possibly in Revit model
  • Work with the Commercial Manager, manage and prepare the procurement of sub contract packages, review and sign off tender packages for completeness and quality
  • Manage inputs, relationships and involvement of internal stakeholders (e.g. Club Committees, Championships Department, etc.)
  • Attend AELTC/Club meetings as required, prepare reports and deliver presentations on design, cost and construction progress
  • Attend and manage design team and progress meetings
  • Assist in selection of consultants, prepare and agree appointment documentation, fees and tenders
  • Review design and construction information issued by the design team/main contractor for compliance with AELTC requirements
  • Run a monthly site walk round any construction works with the main contractor, the landscape architect and the QS, where progress, quality and site issues are discussed and the monthly valuation agreed
  • Ensure the main contractor and consultants are managing the quality of the works and any changes are going through the correct channels
  • Manage interfaces between the Club, Championships and construction to ensure projects are delivered as programmed with no disruption to the staging of the Championships and minimal necessary interference to on-site year-round AELTC/Club activities  
  • Other development and construction related activities as may be required from time to time
  • Work closely with Estate Development project teams and other AELTC departments and suppliers in the delivery of world class site
  • Form contacts with adjacent statutory bodies and authorities for associate infrastructure works and maintenance.

Person specification

Essential

  • Graduate level education with a professional qualification in a relevant design/construction related discipline
  • A good technical understanding of the design, specification, construction and maintenance of high end landscaping areas
  • Good knowledge of specification and construction of hard landscaping materials including stone, ceramic, clay and other hard finishes
  • Experience in managing and delivering projects under a Design and Build JCT contract
  • Up to date IT skills, including managing design within a Revit 3D model,  competent use of Microsoft Project or Asta Powerproject, Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Excellent planning, organisational and delivery skills and comfortable with periods of pressure
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work successfully across a broad spectrum of stakeholders including consultants, contractors, the public and staff  
  • Leadership skills to manage contractors, sub-contractors and consultants to meet tight deadlines
