Tuesday at Queen's

By Alexandra Willis at The Queen's Club

Big win
Jamie Baker. The hard-working Scot pulled off only the second main ATP World Tour win of his career with a 7-6(1), 6-3 victory over British youngster Oliver Golding. Baker, who has suffered setbacks ranging from ankle injuries to potentially fatal blood diseases during his quest to escape the lower echelons of professional tennis, is likely to surpass his career high ranking of world No.203 as a result. He will meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the second round.

One to watch
Grigor Dimitrov. Highly-touted for quite some time, the Bulgarian is considered to be one of the most naturally talented of his age. He saw off Bobby Reynolds in straight sets.

Marathon matches
The Queen’s Club crowds were treated to several three-set scorchers on Tuesday, from Marcos Baghdatis’s explosive 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-2 win over Frederico Gil, to Kevin Anderson’s 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over James Ward, and David Nalbandian’s too. But perhaps the one of most importance was Sam Querrey’s 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-4 win over Olivier Rochus, proving that the American is rediscovering the form that won him the 2010 title here at Queen’s.

Cruising through
Tuesday at the AEGON Championships yielded simple straight sets victories for, among others, Ivo Karlovic, Nicolas Mahut, Gilles Muller, Simone BolelliLukas Rosol, Ivan Dodig, Matthew Ebden, Alex Bogomolov Jr., Sergiy Stakhovsky, Steve Darcis, Xavier Malisse, and Ryan Sweeting. Sweeting, a lucky loser, was particularly impressive in his 6-4, 7-6(6) edging of Dmitry Tursunov, and could be one to keep an eye on as the week progresses.

Stat of the day
75. The percentage of unreturnable first serves produced by Ivo Karlovic during his straight sets win over four-time champion Lleyton Hewitt. 22 of his 32 first serves were aces.

Quote of the day
"It was a very useful experience. Obviously I've never played a guy that ranking or that level before. It was a big eye opener for what I need to improve on. I think you learn from your mistakes, and I'll push on from it."

Coming up on Wednesday

CENTRE

Edouard Roger-Vasselin v Andy Roddick [7]
With fellow four-time champion Lleyton Hewitt already packing his bags, Roddick's quest for a record fifth AEGON Championships title will begin against Frenchman Roger-Vasselin, whom the American leads 1-0 in their head-to-head.

Andy Murray [1] v Nicolas Mahut
The defending champion begins his bid for a third title at The Queen's Club against marathon Frenchman Nicolas Mahut. Murray has won both of their previous meetings.

Jamie Baker [WC] v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga [2]
On such platforms are dreams made. That is what Britain's Baker will be thinking when he takes on second seed and Wimbledon semi-finalist Tsonga in their first meeting today.

Ryan Sweeting [LL] v Janko Tipsarevic [3]
Lucky loser Sweeting upset the experienced Dmitry Tursunov in his opener, and could prove tricky for Tipsarevic, a runner-up at the AEGON International at Eastbourne last year.

COURT 1

Gilles Simon [4] v Simone Bolelli
The counter-punching Frenchman and Italian Bolelli have one win apiece, but given the gap of 107 ranking places between them, Simon should have little trouble.

Steve Darcis v Feliciano Lopez [5]
Semi-finalist at the AEGON Championships in 2010, and a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon last year, Lopez has plenty of experience on grass, and should redress the head-to-head with the Belgian, which Darcis leads 1-0.
