Monday at Eastbourne

By Dan Imhoff at Devonshire Park

Big win
Jamie Baker. The 25-year-old Scot reached the second round of successive tour events for the first time in his career after upsetting 50th ranked American Donald Young. It is only the third main draw ATP World Tour match he has won. For the struggling Young, it marks an unwelcome milestone, his 10th consecutive first-round loss. “In a competitive match that's my best win on rankings,” Baker said. “My next goal is to get inside 150. Once you can have a bit of belief you get momentum and confidence builds.

Marathon matches
In the battle of the North Americans, Ryan Harrison of the US, fought back from a set down to clinch two tie-break sets in beating Canadian qualifier Vasek Pospisil in two and a half hours. In an all-French clash Jeremy Chardy dismissed qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu in the day’s longest match, a three-hour effort while Italian Fabio Fognini and Australian qualifier Marinko Matosevic won their respective two-hour matches. Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak edged Kazkhstan’s Galina Voskoboeva in a third-set tie-break after two and a half hours.

Cruising through
Marcos Baghdatis atoned for an early exit at Queen’s last week with a 6-1 6-1 blitzing of the tournament’s eighth seed Pablo Andujar. The Cypriot is only ranked six places behind the Spaniard and as a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, entered the match as favourite. The women’s eighth seed Daniela Hantuchova made light work of British wild card Anne Keothavong, while in qualifying matches held over, home hope Laura Robson and Greta Arn made quick moves to the main draw.

Stat of the day
2/12 – Paul-Henri Matthieu converted only 17% of his break point opportunities.

Quote of the day
“The big word I’m going to use is belief”
Jamie Baker has his head in the right place after wiping Donald Young.

Centre Court on Tuesday
1) Richard Gasquet v Marinko Matosevic
The 2005-06 champion Gasquet takes a 12-1 record from this event into his match against Aussie qualifier Marinko Matosevic.
2) Petra Kvitova v Ekaterina Makarova
In the battle of the lefties, the defending Wimbledon Champion faces Serena Williams’s Australian Open conqueror.
3) Caroline Wozniacki v Christina McHale
The pair split meetings last year on American hard courts and Wozniacki will be desperate to take the honours on grass.
6) Andy Roddick v Sam Querrey
Arguably the toughest first round match-up in the men’s draw, the two American mates will square off for eighth time. Roddick leads the head-to-head 5-2 but all have been on hard courts.
