Tipsarevic narrowly ousted by Youzhny
It just wasn’t Janko Tipsarevic’s day. The third Serb in the third round of the Gentlemen’s Singles at Wimbledon, bidding to join compatriots Novak Djokovic and Viktor Troicki in the fourth round at The Championships, was upset, unsettled and out-hit by Mikhail Youzhny, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
The Russian, ranked No.8 in the world in 2008, was impeccable on the return of serve, beating Tipsarevic at his own game as he consistently came out on top, both from the back of the court, and at the net. The 30-year-old has had many a happy time at Wimbledon, and with 42 wins to 27 losses on grass, is no mug.
With little to distinguish the two in terms of winners, 38 to 37 in favour of Youzhny, and unforced errors, 14 to 18 in favour of the Russian, the effectiveness of the Youzhny first serve was particularly telling, winning 83 per cent of points when he achieved success with his first delivery.
It was disappointing for Tipsarevic, the ninth seed, who has proved himself a steadier competitor than he used to be, but simply fell down by narrow margins that the score did not entirely
His reward is his seventh Wimbledon fourth round in 12 appearances, where he will take on Denis Istomin, who saw off marathon man Alejandro Falla in four sets, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(5) to become the first Uzbek to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon.
In the remaining Gentlemen’s Singles match of the day, other than the to do taking place on Centre Court, the 31st seed, Florian Mayer, came through an epic against young Pole Jerzy Janowicz, 7-6(5), 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
He will next meet Richard Gasquet, the 18th seed.
