Deheza tumbles out as girls are hampered by rain

The second Tuesday of The Championships usually delivers a feast of junior matches but bad weather proved to be the biggest talking point on a day which saw just three of the girls’ seeds progress through the draw.

Spots of rain, drizzle and the real pelting variety hindered the tournament but while it may have dampened the mood of the spectators and players alike, perhaps the biggest upset of the day – in the girls’ event at least – was the departure of No.15 seed Maria Ines Deheza. The Bolivian right-hander struggled to find form against Turkey’s Ipek Soylu and despite recovering from a slow start bowed out 1-6, 5-7.

Elsewhere No.2 seed Elizaveta Kulichkova emerged the victor of a tough contest with America’s Jennifer Brady. The Russian right-hander, who reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open girls' doubles event earlier this year and has five girls’ singles titles to her name, was pushed throughout her 6-4, 7-6(5) encounter.

Her compatriot Anastasiya Komardina, however, fared less well. On the other side of the net stood Eugenie Bouchard, the No.5 seed who reached the quarter-finals here last year and won the 2011 girls’ doubles with partner Grace Min.

Bouchard, a six-time singles title-holder, was in imposing form as she swept aside Komardina 6-3, 6-3. The Canadian enjoyed a spectacular start to the year when she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open girls' singles and quarter-finals of the doubles event. Although she failed to progress as far on the Parisian clay, the Canadian still reached the fourth round of the girls' singles in Roland Garros and made the semi-finals of the doubles.

Meanwhile, Alexandra Kiick flew the flag for America on a day which saw the exit of Mardy Fish and Brian Baker. The No.13 seed enjoyed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Indonesia’s Aldila Sutjiadi.
