Agnieszka Radwanska seals victory under the roof

By Barry Newcombe

The first rain of  this year's Championships failed to trouble No.4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska on Thursday as she won her second-round match against Mathilde Johansson of France with ease on Centre Court.

Last year's finalist was comfortably ahead at 6-1, 4-2 when the rain came and when the contest resumed after a 47-minute delay while the Centre Court roof was put into place – and Radwanksa quickly claimed  victory.

Radwanska's 6-1, 6-3 win was obtained on her first match point against Johansson's serve. At 30-30 the Pole reached match point with a strong backhand winner down the line and followed that up with a high backhand volley to complete the victory.

Radwanska was runner-up to Serena Williams in her first appearance in the final last year and is one of five former junior champions in this year's draw. At 24 she is playing in The Championships for the eighth time.

Johansson was playing at Wimbledon for the fifth time and Radwanska gave her few opportunities to make a lasting impact on Thursday's match. Johansson did manage to break Radwanska's serve in the fourth game of the second set during which she produced a spectacular drop shot. But the end was beckoning.

Radwanska admitted later that she has never watched a repeat showing of her final against Serena.

"I remember that final so I don't need to watch any more. Every point, trust me," she said.

On her preparations, Radwanska said: "I knew the grass court season is not that long, so I'm really ready for this tournament and just happy to win those two matches in two sets and be ready for the next one."
