Marray and Fleming put down marker in doubles

British pair Colin Fleming and Jonathan Marray will face a daunting test in the third round of the Gentlemen’s Doubles against Robert Lindstedt and Daniel Nestor. Marray and Lindstedt will know plenty about each other on this surface, with the Brit triumphing over the Swede in last year’s Gentleman’s Doubles Final, becoming the first British player to win the event since 1936. Lindstedt couldn’t have picked a more experienced partner in the shape of Daniel Nestor, who has a clean sweep of Grand Slams plus an Olympic Gold Medal.

To get there though, they had to defeat Michal Mertinak and Frantisek Cermak. The No.9 seeds established a  two-set lead but, after both pairs lost their serve twice in the third set, a tie-break was required. Having recovered from a set point down, the British pair won three points in a row to claim a straight-sets win – 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(9) – to advance into the next round.

The world No.1 pair Bob and Mike Bryan showed exactly why they sit top of the rankings as they dismantled Spaniard David Marrero and Italian Andreas Seppi in straight sets. Despite losing a break of serve in the third set, the Bryans recovered to a 6-4 set win. The Americans look the pair to beat having made just two unforced errors.

Brit Jamie Murray and his Australian partner John Peers were eliminated in the cruellest fashion, succumbing to a five-set defeat to the hands of James Blake and Jurgen Melzer.  Blake and Melzer triumphed 14-12 in the final set that lasted one hour and 27 minutes.

After suffering a five-sets defeat to Slovenian Grega Zemlja in the second round of the Gentlemen’s Singles, Grigor Dimitrov paired up with last year’s Gentlemen’s Doubles Champion Frederik Nielson. Nielson along with Jonathan Marray, became the first ever wildcard entries to win the Championships. The pair were ultimately beaten in five sets by No.11 seeds Julien Benneteau and Nenad Zimonjic , 6-7(7), 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, 8-6.

Jamie Delgado and Matthew Ebden were unable to upset the experienced pair of Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek as the No.4 seeds ran out 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 winners on No.5 Court. The No.16 seeds Treat Huey and Brit Dominic Inglot successfully defeated German pair Andre Begemann and Martin Emmrich in four sets – 6-3, 6-7(7), 7-5, 7-6(7) – to set up a third round match with the Bryans.

The No.5 seeds, Aisam Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer, were taken all the way by Xavier Malisse and Briton Ken Skupski, eventually winning 8-6 in the final set.

Canadian pair Jesse Levine and Vasek Pospisil and No.14 seeds Rohan Bopanna and Edouard Roger-Vasselin progressed in five sets.

Elsewhere, No.7 seeds Max Mirnyi and Horia Tecau and No.8 seeds Mahesh bhupathi and Julian Knowle saw off their opponents in four sets to advance through to the third round.

The No.3 seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares claimed a dramatic victory over Australian pair Paul Hanley and John-Patrick Smith, winning 10-8 in the final set.

Finally, No.15 Seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcin Matkowski made a phenomenal recovery from two sets down against Marinko Matkowski to win 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 in two hours and 51 minutes.
