Britain's Robson and Fleming beaten in Mixed Doubles

Laura Robson failed to make up for her disappointment at being knocked out of the Ladies’ Singles as she and Colin Fleming were knocked out on a miserable day for the British players in the Mixed Doubles.

Just hours after losing to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi, Robson, a silver medalist in the Mixed Doubles at last year’s Olympics, took to Court 14 with Colin Fleming – who earlier had been knocked out of the Gentlemen’s Doubles with Jonathan Marray – but the British pair lost 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-3 to Filip Polasek and Janette Husarova in the first round.

After taking the opening set, Marray and Heather Watson also suffered the same fate as their compatriots in the second round as they lost 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to David Marrero and Kimiko Date-Krumm, the 42-year old from Japan who lost to Serena Williams on Saturday evening in the Ladies’ Singles.

There was better fortune for Marray’s fellow Gentlemen’s Doubles champion of last year, Frederik Nielsen, who teamed up with Sofia Arvidsson to beat the teenage pairing of Kyle Edmund and Eugenie Bouchard 7-5, 6-4 in the first round.

After their opening match was suspended at 5-3 in the deciding set on Saturday evening due to bad light, it did not take long for Jean Julien-Rojer and Vera Dushevina to complete the victory over 2007 Mixed Doubles champion Jamie Murray and Su-Wei Hseih 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4.

One of the more random pairings in the draw was that of 33-year-old former world No.4 James Blake and the 17-year-old rising star Donna Vekic. The pair hooked up through the same agent but found the going too tough in the second round against the No.3 seeds Nenad Zimonjic and Katerina Srebotnik, losing 7-5, 6-1.

After achieving the biggest win of her career in beating Williams on Centre Court, Sabine Lisicki was afforded some more time to rest ahead of her singles quarter-final on Tuesday as 41-year-old partner Mark Knowles withdrew, with the No.10 seeds Aisam Qureshi and Cara Black now progressing to the third round.

The only remaining British pair in the draw is Dominic Inglot and Johann Konta, who were due to play the No.8 seeds Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic in the second round on Monday but the match has now been rescheduled for Tuesday.
