Wimbledon's girls spring few surprises

Despite an upheaval of seeded players in the Ladies’ Singles event, many of the top seeds in the Girls’ Singles Championship eased into the third round at the All England Club on a day that saw rain intermittently halt play.

Of the top 16 seeds, 12 have advanced to earn a shot at making the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

The top seed Belinda Bencic lost just four games in her second round campaign, clinching the match in under an hour against Greetje Minnen of Germany. Bencic played a clean game to grab her spot in the third round, hitting 15 winners to four unforced errors.

She next plays the No.13 seed Anett Kontaveit for a spot in the quarter-final.

Joining Bencic, the No.2 seed Ana Konjuh also looked sharp in her 6-1, 7-6 (4) dismantling of Britain’s Harriet Dart. Although the second set would last 67 minutes, the Croatian proved to be the more aggressive and successful of the two, hitting 37 winners and converting 13 of 16 points played at net.

The Croatian plays Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia for a shot at the final eight.

Like Bencic, the No.3 seed Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic lost only four games en route to the next round. She preyed off 21 unforced errors made by Jana Fett, while hitting only eight of her own.

Siniakova is set to go against No.15 Louisa Chirico, a recent semi-finalist at Roland Garros.

The No.4 seed Barbora Krejcikova overcame a rain delay to close out her match versus Japan’s Kyoka Okamura 6-3, 6-2. She hit over twice as many winners, 24 to 11, as her opponent and meets the No.16 Ipek Soylu next.

Others to advance to the third round on day eight include No.5 Taylor Townsend, No.6 Elise Mertens, No.9 Carol Zhao, No.11 Karin Kennel and No.12 Anhelina Kalinina.

Meanwhile, of the 14 seeds in action, the only players to succumb to lower-ranked opponents were No.8 Ching-Wen Hsu, who lost in a 7-5, 6-4 fight against Russia’s Anastasiya Komardina, and No.10 Camila Giangreco Campiz, who failed in fending off Jamie Loeb of the United States.

The two seeded players to lose in the first round were No.7 seed Britain’s Katy Dunner, and No.14 Nina Stojanovic.
