Quotes of the Second Tuesday

By Helen Gilbert

Picking out our favourites from the Wimbledon press room transcripts on Tuesday...

On cheery demeanours
“Three years ago when I couldn't walk, I had to learn how to walk again, and that made me appreciate every single moment out there a lot more. That's why I don't let anybody take that away from me,” Sabine Lisicki explains the reason why she plays with such joy.

On junior days
“We played some teams championship in Poland that I think was under 10 or 12.  So it was really long time ago.  You know, the time flies, and suddenly we all here playing semi-final of a Grand Slam. So I think this is great to face someone that you know for so many years, playing all these tournament under 10, 12, 14, then juniors as well,” Agnieszka Radwanska reflects on her yester-year matches against Sabine Lisicki

On celebrity support
“I'm good friend with Bob Sinclar.  I don't know if you know him.  He's a great D.J. Obviously, I have a great team around me that really help me to pump me up and help me play some great tennis as well,” Marion Bartoli names the one celebrity she would like to be present for her semi-final against Kirsten Flipkens.

On maiden semi-final appearances
“Last year...I didn't get into the qualifying of Wimbledon.  I was ranked 262; today I'm a semi-finalist in a Grand Slam.  It's a dream ‑ more than a dream ‑ coming true. There's no words,” an overjoyed Kirsten Flipkens is delighted at reaching the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career.

On winning Wimbledon
“It's a secret.  But when it happens, I will be like, Remember when we were talking at Wimbledon?  This is what it is. So I'll let you know” a smiling Sloane Stephens believes she can win the Championships soon but won’t reveal when.

On former Wimbledon champions
“I was watching Martina when I was a kid. She was my idol... Then we played once.  It was few years ago in Miami...It was really good match.  I think she was top 10 again... I really have great memories from that match.  I think she's a great champion playing so smart tennis. So when I heard they were comparing me to her, it's a very big compliment,” Agnieszka Radwanska expresses her delight at being likened to Martina Hingis.

 On unexpected results

“If you would have told me in the beginning of the tournament who was going to be with the last four, I would never say the four who are still in actually. I mean, yeah, okay, Agnieszka.  But the other three are a little bit of a surprise.  I think I'm the most surprising name in the last four,” Kirsten Flipkens struggles to comes to terms with her victory over 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.
