Quotes of the Second Friday

By Helen Gilbert

Picking out our favourites from the Wimbledon press room transcripts on Friday...

On shopping trips
“It's her birthday, so I just went this morning into the shop and got her some presents.  I didn't have the time yesterday night... It was a great moment also to share... having her birthday and me playing the final tomorrow.  It's kind of a nice birthday present.  Hopefully I will be able to win the trophy,” Marion Bartoli hopes she can celebrate Amelie Mauresmo’s birthday with a Wimbledon triumph.

On nicknames

“One of the first ones I think was Boom Boom Bina...Bina is my nickname in Germany, so I think that suits me quite well with my game,” Sabine Lisicki on her favourite moniker.

“Well, I have a few nicknames, so one more, it's okay,” Juan Martin Del Potro, who was affectionately named ‘Del Boy’ by spectators during his thrilling five set semi against Novak Djokovic.

On inspirational people

“She meant a lot to me.  She was the mentor and she was the lady that kind of made me understand this life, tennis.  I inherited that passion and love towards the sport from her...I owe a lot to her... I'm really glad that I'm in the finals because of her also...I'm sure that she wants me to be here and she wants me to fight for the title,” world No.1 Novak Djokovic remembers his first coach, Jelena Gencic,  who passed away a few weeks ago.

“Why are you not wearing my kit?” Andy Murray jokes that this is the question Fred Perry might ask if he were alive today.
