Cash and Woodforde roll back the years in doubles

On the day that saw Andy Murray claim his second Grand Slam title, some of the greatest players in tennis history took to the courts in the Senior Gentlemen’s Invitation Doubles, Gentlemen’s Invitation Doubles and Ladies’ Invitation Doubles.

The Australian pair of Pat Cash, the 1987 Wimbledon winner, and Mark Woodforde, a 12-times Grand Slam doubles champion, claimed a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Jeremy Bates, of Britain, and Sweden’s Anders Jarryd in just over an hour for the Senior Invitation Doubles Championship. During the match, Cash and Woodforde struck two aces to none for their opponents, along with seven winners to three to claim the title.

While Jeremy Bates made the fourth round of Wimbledon in 1992 and 1994, along with the Australian Open double final in 1988, Anders Jarryd collected one of each of the four majors in doubles, including Wimbledon twice, in 1989 and 1991.

Also winners on Day 13 of the Wimbledon Fortnight were Lindsay Davenport, a three-times major champion, and Martina Hingis, who has five to her name. They defeated Jana Novotna and Barbara Schett 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour to secure the Ladies’ Invitation Doubles Championship.

Novotna won the Wimbledon title in 1998 and Schett advanced to the semi-finals of the Australian Open and US Open in doubles.

In the third match of the day, Thomas Enqvist, a finalist at the Australian Open in 1999, and Mark Philippoussis, a runner-up at both Wimbledon and the US Open, beat Greg Rusedski and two-times Australian Open doubles winner Fabrice Santoro in straight sets to take the Gentlemen’s Invitation Doubles Championship.

Enqvist and Philippoussis won 7-6(6), 6-3 in 83 minutes.
