Chris Evert: 'What Wimbledon means to me'

To celebrate the launch of the competition to design the Official Wimbledon Poster for 2014, judge Chris Evert tells Wimbledon.com what springs to mind when she thinks of The Championships...

"What stands out to me when I think of Wimbledon? The ivy on the building. The history of the event. Royalty. No other tournament has those things.

"The prestige that Wimbledon has. The all-white rule. It's pristine. It's a tournament that has protocols, and rules, and boundaries. There's a lot of respect for that. And it is, quite frankly, the premier tournament of all the Grand Slams, in a lot of players' minds. 

"The grass, the smell of the grass. No other Grand Slam do you play on grass. The dignity of the tournament, the hush that you feel when you walk out on Centre Court.

"If I were to only win one, I would prefer to win Wimbledon rather than any of them. It’s the first one we saw on TV.  I remember watching Margaret Court/Billie Jean King play the finals.  I don’t know if it was black and white, but it pretty much was black and white.  I remember all the way across the ocean, the history of the event adds to it."
