Fantasy tips: Serving up a winning combination

Because the price bands are calculated from the last three years’ performances at Wimbledon, it’s quite possible that someone will be highly-rated on the strength of only a couple of matches, compared with someone else who has played several matches and whose average is lower.
That’s where knowledge and research comes in. For example, Rafael Nadal, who lost early in 2012 and 2013, played only 10 matches in those three years and since he lost three of them, his statistics may be skewed slightly against him. If you think he’s underpriced, then you might snap him up at 300, knowing that if he goes well, you might get much better value.
The serve statistic favours those who hit a lot of aces and very few double faults and, not surprisingly, the likes of Sam Querrey (above) and John Isner are high up the price list. That is based on performance but you have to think about how far they may go in the tournament.
Of course, you can make changes as you go, but remember, if you choose “serve” as your wildcard, you get double points for as long as they remain in the tournament. But if you do that – and they go out – though you can change the selection, you no longer have a wildcard earning double points.
So the dilemma is whether to make your wildcard someone you think will go the furthest, or someone who will rack up enough points early on to make it worthwhile.
There will always be some bargains in there, especially as players who have not played at Wimbledon in the past three years are all rated as 50. That’s just for consistency but it means someone like Taylor Townsend, who has a great serve but who is playing her first senior Wimbledon, is great value at 50.
Anna Konjuh, a hard-hitting young Croatian, goes for broke on her serve and could hit lots of aces, but also might cough up a lot of double faults.
Remember to consult the statistics pages on the Wimbledon website throughout the tournament and use them to gain an edge on your friends and family.
