Toni Nadal, Rafa’s coach and uncle, talks idols, life mottos and why he is not superstitious.
What is your earliest tennis memory? One was the Masters finals in Barcelona [in 1972] – Ilie Nastase against Stan Smith. I liked to see very much Nastase – he showed good character on court and I like the aesthetics of his game.
Are you a worrier? I’m calm normally, but yes with life sometimes. Before the start of the tournament you are worried, when you are on court you’re worried because it’s important to win. When you play a final, you worry. It’s normal.
I am logical. My intelligence doesn't allow me to be superstitious
Are you superstitious? Never. I am logical. My intelligence doesn’t allow me to be superstitious.
Where would you go in a time machine? I’m happy here.
What's the last book you read? Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia. I have read it before and now again when I was in Stuttgart.
Life motto? Family first, then work. Life is many things. Friends are important [too].
Speaking of friends, how would yours describe you? You have to go to my friend and ask him.
What are three things you need to be a successful tennis player? You need more than three things. Good eyes are very important - to see the ball fast, reaction and coordination. Also, legs, you have to be very quick and good shots.
If you could take one shot from any player, past or present what would it be? Nadal’s mental strength, McEnroe’s volley, Federer’s forehand, and Djokovic’s backhand.
Who are your idols? The problem today is that people have idols everywhere. I only have one idol in my life – Nastase.
How would you sum up Wimbledon in three words? Beautiful, special tournament.
