They’ve respectively played the longest and second longest matches in Wimbledon history – and now John Isner and Marin Cilic are locked in another marathon at the All England Club, with their third-round match suspended at 10-10 in the fifth set due to darkness.
Having split the first two tie-break sets, Cilic claimed the first service break of the match in the ninth game of the third set. He consolidated to win the set 6-4, but the match was sent to a fifth set when Isner claimed the fourth set in a tie-break.
The dramatic fifth set saw Cilic break Isner’s serve in the second game but Isner once again levelled when he claimed his own service break three games later. The next break point for Isner, in the 10th game of that set, was also a match point – but with that saved, the match remained on serve for a further 10 games.
The pair had been playing for four hours and 16 minutes when play was suspended.
With the two marathon men also two of the biggest servers in the men’s game, the serve is unsurprisingly the most notable statistic of the match, with Cilic’s 34 aces just shading Isner's 33.
The No.9 seed Cilic has also recorded 79 winners compared to 66 from No.17 seed Isner. Unforced errors also separate the two men, Isner recording 50 against 34 from Cilic.
In 2010, Isner famously took 11 hours and five minutes to defeat Nicolas Mahut 78-60 in the fifth set of their first round. Cilic’s milestone in winning the second-longest match occurred against Sam Querrey in the third round in 2012, the Croat winning 17-15 in the fifth set after five hours and 31 minutes. The match will be resumed on No.1 Court on Saturday.
