Williams completes historic ‘Serena Slam’
Serena Williams beats Spanish youngster Garbine Muguruza 6-4, 6-4 to claim her sixth Wimbledon ladies title and the second ‘Serena Slam’ of her career. READ MORE

Serena Williams proved too strong for Spanish 21-year-old Garbine Muguruza as the American blasted her way to her sixth Wimbledon singles title with a 6-4, 6-4 victory on Centre Court.

The result earns the American world No.1 her second so-called ‘Serena Slam’. She now holds all four major trophies in the sport - the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

Williams has now won 21 Grand Slam singles titles and is just seven matches short of a historic ‘calendar’ Grand Slam – winning all four majors in the same year, an achievement she will hope to complete at the US Open later this summer.

Muguruza started the match strongly, building leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in the opening set, before Williams started to settle. The No.1 seed reeled off four successive games to take the first set after 44 minutes.

Williams raced into a 5-1 lead in the second before some spectacular late resistance from the No.20 seed. She saved a match point with Serena serving at 5-3 before Williams recovered to break in the next game and complete another famous victory.
