Juniors make their entrance

Britain’s Luke Bambridge made it through to the second round of the boys’ singles competition at Wimbledon with a marathon three-set win over American Noah Rubin. The 18-year-old, who is ranked 841 in the world, came through 3-6, 6-4, 9-7 on Court No.4.

Bambridge’s win was the only home success in the Boys' opening round as Samm Butler lost to sixth seed Gianluigi Quinzi, of Italy, 6-1, 6-1. Elsewhere, British players Cameron Norrie and Alexander Sendegeya both lost to Serbian Laslo Djere and Bradley Mousley, of Australia, respectively.

In the girls’ singles, Britain’s Katie Boulter wrapped up a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Croatia’s Adrijana Lekaj while her compatriot, Lana Rush, defeated Argentine Constanza Vega 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

There wasn't such good fortune for British interest in the day’s other matches. Isabelle Wallace lost in three sets to Romania’s Ioana Loredana Rosca and No.7 seed Katy Dunne went down 6-2, 6-2 to Ioana Ducu, again, from Romania. Anna Brogan also lost out to Ching-Wen Hsu of Taipei.
