Mixed fortunes in the mixed doubles

Day six of The Championships saw six British players in action in the mixed doubles on the heels of Laura Robson’s three-set victory in the ladies’ singles.

Of those, four advanced to play another day at the All England Club.

For the combination of Jonathan Marray, the first British man to win a doubles championship at Wimbledon since 1936 in his run to the title last year, and Britain’s No.2 Heather Watson, their first-round campaign went smoothly. The pairing defeated Robin Haase and Alicja Rosolska 6-3, 7-5 in 76 minutes.

Striking a combined three aces and eight winners, the duo dropped just three points on unforced errors for a spot into the second round.

For a place in round three, Marray and Watson will take on the No.14 seeds David Marero of Spain and Kimiko Date-Krumm, who is notably the oldest woman entered into The Championships at 42 years old.

Along with Marray and Watson, Dominic Inglot and Johanna Konta survived a marathon match against the Spanish pair of Nicolas Almagro and Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor. They closed out their first round victory 4-6, 6-3, 19-17 in 173 minutes and through a dominating performance. Over the course of the match, the Brits blasted 26 aces, while striking 35 winners for a spot in the next round.

Up next for Inglot and Konta are the No.8 seeds, Daniel Nestor of Canada and Kristinia Mladenovic of France.

The last British duo to play on day six, but who ultimately proved unsuccessful in their first round match, were Jamie Delgado and Tara Moore. They put up a fight in their opening set versus the Italians Fabio Fognini and Flavia Pennetta by getting to a tie-break. Ultimately, however, they succumbed by a score of 7-6 (2), 6-3.

Their undoing came as their opponents proved stronger when getting the first serve into play. When that happened, Fognini and Pennetta converted 82 per cent of points to 65 per cent for Delgado and Moore.

Other players representing Britain and who are scheduled to see action in the mixed doubles are Jamie Murray, the brother of last year’s Wimbledon runner-up and the No.2 seed in the gentlemen’s singles Andy Murray, who partners with Su-Wei Hsieh.

Additionally, Robson, the British women’s No.1, teams up with doubles specialist Colin Fleming for a shot at grabbing the title at the All England Club.
