Nick Kyrgios puts down a marker in boys' singles

World No.1 junior and the top seed in the boys’ singles championships, Nick Kyrgios, is safely through to the second round after a straight sets win on Monday.

His challenger was local hope Evan Hoyt, who had the crowd on his side, but Kyrgios simply had too much firepower for him as he posted a 6-4 6-3 first-round win.

Playing on Court 4 in front of a large crowd, Kyrgios showed off his wares – namely a booming serve that he uses to set up points before unleashing his forehand.

This will be the Australian’s final appearance at a junior event and he’s determined to leave on a high note before fully focusing his attention on making a successful transition to the men’s tour.

“There’s a lot of expectation being the No.1 seed again. This will be the last junior tournament I ever play in my life, so I want to go out on a pretty good memory,” he said.

“I’ve just got five more days of pretty hard work, knuckling down and hopefully I’ll be on Court 1 on Saturday.”

Not that he’s getting ahead of himself.

“It’s just a process, you can’t really think forward, you’ve just got to focus every match because there’s a lot of good players in juniors.”

Player s joining Kyrgios in the second round include Nikola Milojevic, Yoshihito Nishioka, Hugo Di Feo, Daniel Windahl and Kyle Edmund.

Edmund, the British No.5 seed, thrilled local fans with a solid 6-4 6-3 win over Korea’s Young Seok Kim. Coming off a quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros, Edmund will be hoping to replicate that success, and more, in front of his home fans.

Edmund will face unseeded Japanese 17-year-old Nishioka, who was too good for Australian qualifier Jay Andrijic, winning 6-4 6-4.

Second seed Nikola Milojevic was also a straight-sets winner in his first-round match, defeating Great Britain’s Jamie Malik.

Milojevic was a semi-finalist at Roland Garros and a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open boys’ events earlier this year. He’s currently the second ranked boy behind Kyrgios and has racked up an impressive 35-4 win-loss record leading into Wimbledon.

Unseeded Canadian Hugo Di Feo pulled off perhaps the upset of the day in the boys’ championships when he ousted No.13 seed, Belgian Clement Geens, 6-3 5-7 9-7. Di Feo will next play Korea’s Hyeon Chung for a place in the third round.
